Gradall Forklift Parts - During the time when WWII created a scarcity of laborers, the legendary Gradall excavator was born in the 1940s as the creation of two brothers Ray and Koop Ferwerda. The brothers faced the problems of a depleted labor force due to the war. As partners in their Cleveland, Ohio construction company called Ferwerda-Werba-Ferwerda they lacked the available workers to be able to do the delicate job of grading and finishing on their freeway projects. The Ferwerda brothers decided to build a machine which will save their company by making the slope grading job more efficient, less manual and easier.

The very first excavator prototype consisted of a device with two industrial beams on a rotating platform fixed to a used truck. There was a telescopic cylinder which was used to move the beams backward and forward. This allowed the fixed blade at the far end of the beams to pull or push the dirt. Soon improving the initial design, the brothers built a triangular boom to add more strength. Also, they added a tilt cylinder that let the boom turn 45 degrees in both directions. A cylinder was placed at the rear of the boom, powering a long push rod to allow the machinery to be equipped with either a bucket or a blade attachment.

1992 marked a significant year for Gradall with their launch of XL Series hydraulics, the most dramatic change in the company's excavators since their creation. These top-of-the-line hydraulics systems enabled Gradall excavators to provide high productivity and comparable power on a realistic level to conventional excavators. The XL Series ended the initial Gradall equipment power drawn from low pressure hydraulics and gear pumps. These conventional systems successfully handled finishing work and grading but had a difficult time competing for high productivity work.

Gradall's new XL Series excavators showed more ability to lift and dig materials. With this series, the models were made together with a piston pump, high-pressure system of hydraulics that showed noticeable improvement in boom and bucket breakout forces. The XL Series hydraulics system was even developed together with a load-sensing capability. Traditional excavators make use of an operator to pick a working-mode; where the Gradall system could automatically adjust the hydraulic power intended for the job at hand. This makes the operator's general work easier and even conserves fuel simultaneously.

Once their XL Series hydraulics came onto the market, Gradall was essentially thrust into the highly competitive market of equipment designed to tackle demolition, pavement removal, excavating and other industrial jobs. Marketability was further improved with their telescoping boom due to its exclusive ability to better position attachments and to work in low overhead areas.
